The height is 98 m.), the work of Zurab Tsereteli was erected in 1997 on the order of the Moscow Government on an artificial island piled up in the division of the Moscow River and the Vodootvodny Canal. One of the highest monuments in Russia. The total height of the monument is 98 meters, the height of Peter's figure is 18 meters.
According to Russian media publications, this monument is a recycled and modified Columbus statue, which Tsereteli unsuccessfully offered to buy the USA, Spain and Latin America in 1991-1992, to the 500th anniversary of the Europeans' discovery of the American continent. These rumors are trying to refute.
