Basic Tips to Buy a Camera at a Yard Sale

Here in the community, we often read about how our fellow Lomographers bought a camera at a yard sale or flea market. But how do we know when buying a camera if it is in a functioning state? Here are a few tips about what to look for (or to avoid).

Analogue is in Vogue: The Rise of Film Photography

Film photography has had quite a journey over the past decade. Only a few years ago people were hailing the death of film. "Digital is the future", people said. It certainly looked that way. But recently people are falling over themselves to replicate film photography. iPhone apps are mimicking lo-fi photography - Lomography is in vogue. I'm seeing more and more people with vintage and Lomography cameras slung over their shoulders in London's tourist hotspots.

I Love Watching People Doing Their Work

I claim: you can´t get more authenticity than with people at work! I guess a lot of poeple can´t think of stepping into a store, bakery, coiffeur or whatever, take out their camera and ask if they can take a few pictures. But you being an (silent) observer ensures you getting authenticity and you decide the moment which is worth being captured - not the right facial expression you need to quick pull the trigger.

Haas: coffee and art. When I lived in the colorful area of Bo-Kaap 7 years ago, I couldn't imagine finding SUCH a place there at all. But all these years later, things have changed for the good. Bo-Kaap is an area of Cape Town, South Africa formerly known as the Malay Quarter. It is quintessentially a Township, situated on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre and is a historical centre of Cape Malay culture in Cape Town.

One of the most amazing things about Istanbul is that it collects so many architectural styles and historic moments. Well, you can say this about Berlin, too, but in Istanbul you go way back. Before the Arabian influence took over it was a merely Christian area and during the Byzantium the architecture was very roman.

I can´t really say something about public market culture in the US, but I reckon it is everywhere different, hence the very 50 states all have a different history and flavor. I personally dig the coasts the most and therefore I was quite impressed by the fish market at the Pike Place Market.

Cultural Center Georges Pompidou – Beaubourg

The main modern art collection in Paris is to be seen in the Center Georges Pompidou - Beaubourg: it's the second most important collection of the world after the famous MOMA in New York. But "Beaubourg" as the Parisians like to call it is also an important cultural center with a huge library, many cultural events (concerts, thematic movie retrospectives and other cultural representations) and is also a fascinating building of a very "futuristic style" of the 70's.

The Emirates are too over the top to be comprehended by a simple mind like me. But one thing I understood perfectly so far: deliver entertainment and sensations no matter of the costs. One perfect example for this is the ski Dubai! As we know, Dubai is in the middle of the desert! Desert equals sun equals heat equals no snow equals question. Answer: the sheikhs just build an amusement dome where there is a ski-world.

    Olympia Stadium Berlin

The Olympia stadium in Berlin is the most beautiful stadium in the world... in the eyes of all fans of the local football club Hertha BSC. And so is my opinion. It was built for the Olympic Games in 1936 and therefore it was built majestically to serve Hitler's delight in eternal propaganda for the German Reich.
