Het Huis Van Alijn

Shoes with letters for Saint Nicolas. Saint Nicolas is a typical Dutch and Belgian tradition which kids love. On the evening of 5th December, the kids put an empty plate in the livingroom with next to it their shoe, filled with a letter to Saint-Nicolas and a carrot or a lump of sugar for his horse. The kids believe that by night, Saint Nicolas crosses the roofs of all the children with his horse and his helpers and drops down from the chimney bearing a bag of gifts (mostly toys and candy). On the morning of 6th December, the children will get up from their beds all excited and discover the goodies in their shoes, on their plates and spread across the floor. The carrot will be gone and the kids will be happy as hell. I really miss the time I still believed in Saint Nicolaus.
