Max Baryshnikov, more popularly known in the Lomographic community as maximum_b, hails from Moscow, Russia. Tell the community a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun and is it the same thing you do for a living?

I’m a passionate photographer. Even when I’m not holding my camera in my hands, I continue to take pictures with my mind. As a hobby, I like to travel and I’m a big fan of movies.

What got you started in Lomography/Analogue Photography? And when did you start?

I’ve learned analogue black and white photography at Architectural school, when I was a student. In 2002, I switched to digital. In 2004, I studied studio lighting with 4 years of intense shootings, In 2006, I had a feeling that something is missing in my digital pictures. In the same year, a friend of mine, also a photographer who loves and collects books on photography, showed me his new book “Holga: The World Through a Plastic Lens” by Adam Scott. It impressed me so much that the next day, I got a new Holga.

What’s your favorite camera and setup? Any favorite accessories?

My first favorite is Holga, then I was addicted to Horizon Perfekt. Now I shoot mostly with Diana F+ and Diana Mini. Accessories: Diana Instant Back, Splitzer, and the Diana Flash, of course.

Your gallery is amazing. Aside from shooting people and portraits, what else do you like taking pictures of?
People, by far, is my favorite theme, but also, I like to shoot landscapes, architecture and transport: cars, ships, and trains.

How would you describe analogue lifestyle?

Natural, authentic, and sophisticated.

Can you also share with us your strangest, funniest, or best Lomographic experience?

The strangest and funniest was my sudden trip into the world of BDSM photography. One day, a guy, who introduced himself as a photographer called and asked me if it’s possible to shoot in my studio some nude pictures of his model. I said “ok” and on the next day they came with a their huge collection of ropes & sticks. They didn’t mind when I shot at the backstage using my Diana & Holga.

If you could take your camera and a sack of film anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

If it’s a choice of one place, I would love to go to NYC because it’s one of the best urban places in the world to shoot, it’s huge, it’s beautiful by day and by night, and I’ve never been there yet. But there are dozens of amasing locations in Asia, Latin America, and Africa where I wish to shoot.

Tell us something about you’ve been doing lately, like your latest project.

My latest project is called “My Facebook” – it’s a collection of instant portraits (polaroid transfers) of my friends, which I collect in my Moleskine notebook.

What can you say to people who want to try Lomography. Any tips?

Shoot with your heart, not with your mind. Be curious. Don’t take it seriously, have fun!
