Foamlabbers as Lomo Amigos #7: Fenna

Seven young photography fanatics in one creative team – Foam Lab. We’ve been following them for a year and posted a serie of amigo articles about each one of them. After Rosa, Erik, Eelke, Liset, Jerry and Hugo – please meet Fenna!

Tell the community a little bit about yourself? What do you do for fun and is it the same thing you do for a living?
Like all previous six amigos in this serie, I was also part of the Foam Lab team. For one year we did exactly what we wanted to do and created a very close friendship. Now I will introduce myself to you. My name is Fenna, I am twenty-five years old, I love to buy shoes and dresses, I like to watch good movies (We need to talk about Kevin is a must) and I really love sweet pies. I was born and raised in Breda and now I’m trying to find my way around the capital.

As a 17-year old kid I started studying at the Art Academy St. Joost in Breda, here I photographed for a while. But I discovered a desire to give others a platform for their art . Because of this interest I decided to study Museology at the Reinwardt Academy. So five years ago I ended up in the city of Amsterdam. Besides visits to museums, I like to cycle through the Vondelpark and I love to drink coffee with friends. During openings I work at gallery Ron Mandos and now I’m looking for a job in the cultural sector. I am very aware that I am not the only one searching, but I’m hopeful.

Foam Lab
During my studies I did an internship at the communications department of Foam. Right above my desk was the Foam attic. They played awful 90’s music and made lots of fun. It seemed really nice so I applied for Lab 2011. By working together with peers and creating events for them, everything we did was very close to ourselves. It is very inspiring, frustrating and confrontational to be part of Lab. But if I had to say what I think about Lab in just one word, I would shout: lovely.

How long have you been a Lomographer or are you new to this whole thing?
The friendship with Lomography the Netherlands was really nice. I had seen lomo pictures before, but I never photographed with a lomo camera before this year. I had to get used to analog photography. I enjoyed the tension of waiting for the negatives. To be a lomographer was completely new to me. Sometimes I even forgot to adjust the few settings there are.. The Lomography cameras are a hit with the people around me, funny that my Nikon is less noticeable than the Supersampler.

How does an average day of Fenna look like?
I won’t say that I am forgetful, maybe a bit chaotic. During a normal day I prefer to start with the Volkskrant in my pajamas while eating breakfast. I live temporarily in a studio with no internet and no cable. So I lose myself in a book of Murakami: The Wind – Up Bird Chronicles. Or I hop on my bike to work. Or I go looking for my love to kiss him.

What was the strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter you had while doing the series?
I like to wander through the city without a goal. So one Sunday I stumbled upon the fair on Dam Square. Luckily I had the LC-A+ with me in the giant’s stride. So the topshot of Amsterdam is not taken from a helicopter unfortunately, it was a fairground attraction.

Also, I want to share a picture of my friend Eva Line, she is my favorite photographic object who is next to me often. I like her because we eat together all the time, pie, chips and spaghetti in Amsterdam, Tilburg, Magandou or Paris. Besides eating I like listening to French music (Brigitte Bardot and Kap Bambino).

What else is on the agenda for you? Anything you are looking forward to you would like to share?
My new red leather agenda has no appointments yet. Maybe I will send a postcard from Brazil or I give an update of a great event in a museum.

Your advice for future lomographers:
Make sure to keep it in your bag all the time and look for the sun!
