My drumsticks for an LC-Wide: Marky Ramone

4

Last week we teased you with a striking news: Marky Ramone, drummer of pioneering punk-rock band the Ramones, will become a LomoAmigo!
We met him in Venice, Italy, where he traded his drumsticks for an LC-Wide. Enjoy the interview and his stunning photos of the Venice Lagoon.

Hi Marky, first of all, we feel very honored to be in front of you, thanks a lot for this interview.
Thanks to you guys.

After 40 years what do you think is the best adjective to describe the music you play?
Very energetic, full of life and consistency

Do you perceive any difference between the music you used to play in the past and the one you play now?
Not really: same drum roll, same feel, same energy…nothing has changed!

With your experience and music background, what do you think are the best ingredients to make good music nowadays?
Be original, keep rehearsing, admit who your influences are and combine them in order to form your own style.

What’s your relationship with analogue photography?
Well, I like a lot of the stuff that was done in the 70’s in New York City by Bob Gruen, Lee Black Childers and photographers of that time. But especially Bob Gruen because with his analogue camera he captured a lot of the stuff that was going on in New York City at the CBGB’s time: Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads…

Has there ever been a moment during a concert in which you wanted to have a camera with you to capture a feeling? If so, which concert and when?
Well, would be a bit hard for me to shoot while I am playing drums but yeah, it’s so good to see the audience reaction. If I could just stop playing I would do it but it’s hard…but I know what you mean so I say the US Festival, 3 September 1982, in Devore (California)

Which other bands played with you at that Festival?
B-52’s, Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, Gang Of Four…and this was in front of a hundred and fifty thousand people!

What are your plans for the future?
I don’t know…just having fun! And keep on playing Ramones songs because that is what people want to hear. These songs are just too good to not play them!

Very last question: according to you, what is the perfect picture?
The perfect picture? I would go with the cover of the first Ramones album.

The interview is over, thanks a lot for your time, Marky!
Thank you very much for that!

I love the Ramones! My favourite photo ever is of Joey Ramone in the heavily graffitied toilets in CBGBs - RIP Joey.
