Meet the Founder of The Setup: LomoAmigo Daniel Bogan

Daniel Bogan is the founder of The Setup and a developer at Flickr in San Francisco. Read on to get to know the man behind the computer!

Hi Daniel! Tell us who you are, what you do, and what you love!

Hi! I’m Daniel. I’ve been pushing bits onto the Internets since the late 90’s. I’m a developer at Flickr, where I’ve spent the last five and a bit years writing code and/or seeing how many times I can break the site.

I’m mostly kidding. I think.

I love photography, coffee, my wife, coffee and our four small, slightly insane dogs. And coffee.

Why did you start The Setup?

Y’know when you were a kid, and you’d take stuff apart thinking you’ll find out how it works, but mostly just finding out what’s inside and fucking it all up instead? No? Well, that was me. I’m not entirely sure if that’s the reason I started the site, but it’s a fun anecdote that’s vaguely related.

I once took my digital camera apart because the lens has this dust inside it. Totally, utterly destroyed it.

What would be your dream setup?

Something like what I have currently, only with an insanely long-lasting battery and really, really quiet fans. Maybe?

And a unicorn.

What hardware do you use?

A MacBook Pro. Doesn’t everyone?

And what software?

Nothing too fancy.

How was your experience shooting with the La Sardina camera?

I had no idea what I was doing – I’ve become so focused on digital that I had to look up a YouTube video on how to load film, and I think I still screwed it up. But that’s my fault, not the camera’s. The camera is very cute, very twee! The kids will like it. I bet the kids like it.

What did you most enjoy about shooting with film?

Shooting film made me think more about what I was shooting, almost like there was a debt to the film to not just fuck around and mess it up and waste it, unlike digital. Like I owed it to the film to put more effort in.

Not that I did, mind you. But the thought was there, and that’s something. Is that something? Sorry, I wasted your film.

What are some of your favourite hangouts in San Francisco?

My house! Also the local coffee place – The Mill – which is a new, shiny fancy place full of fancy people drinking fancy coffee and eating fancy toast. I really like their coffee.

Coffee is your friend.

What’s your favorite part of working on Flickr?

Working on something that millions of people use kind of blows my mind a little bit. That’s fun. Also, our team is ridiculously awesome – I have a lot (maybe even too much) fun at work.

Lastly, do you have any advice for aspiring software geeks?

You don’t need to go to school or take a course to learn – it’s possible to teach yourself! Read everything you can, learn from other people’s code, write lots of code, and get over the fact that it’s going to be really, really terribly when you start out, and that’s ok.
