"Super!" A Superhero Series Shot With My Belair Jetsetter X 6-12

This photo series was shot entirely using my Belair Jetsetter X 6-12. It is my attempt to deconstruct the Superhero archetype. It is currently hanging in the Foto[K] Gallery for Fine Art Photography in Vienna. Check it out until July 6th!

This is actually my very first exhibit. Aside from a few stressful and annoying incidents, it actually turned out quite the educational experience! I have learned a lot from it. I would definitely carry on the lessons I have learned over my future exhibits. There are things I would definitely never do again, but then there are also some elements that I would like to work on perfecting in my future analogue projects. I guess for me, the saddest thing is when people see my work and totally miss the punchline. My photos are always humorous. There is always something comical (pun intended) within the image, and it's just sad to see that there are people who are so serious, they totally miss the point of my photographs. I guess I just have to keep making them until they see it.

I’ve always been a fan of comic books ever since I was a child. I am currently working on a series that tries to deconstruct the norm. Or in other words, I am trying to challenge the superhero archetype. By blending various elements (whether related to the character or not) I have attempted to create images that allow people to explore, poke fun, and see superheroes in a different light.

Drawing inspiration from Richard Avedon’s style of portraiture, and David LaChapelle’s quirky and ironic sense of humor, I have worked on this series by keeping the set simple, but the costumes, and props elaborate and flashy. I also attempted to refrain from any “cosplay” type of staging and rather let the image be a bold direct statement of itself.

I shot the entire series using my Lomography Belair X 6-12 Jetsetter and rolls of Kodak Portra 400. I chose the Belair because I wanted a certain lo-fi two-dimensional look akin to printed images on comic books. I then enlarged my prints to around 100x100cm (yes, they are huge!) to literally give the "larger than life" effect of comic book characters.

For those of you who are still interested in seeing my photos up close, the gallery is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 17.00 until 20.00 and Saturdays from 11.00 until 16.00. :) The exhibit lasts until the 6th of July. I may not be there, but it would be great if you could drop by at fotoK(2) Galerie, Reindorfgasse 38, 1150
