Film Artist and Light Show Host Julian Hand

Julian Hand is a film artist and visual projectionist for our latest LomoAmigos, The Oscillation. He uses traditional analogue techniques to create swirling, trippy and beautifully tactile films, and light shows. He uses Super 8 film, coloured inks, washing up liquid, soap, and acetate to create these images and visuals. He embraces all things analogue! I brought an LC-A+, some 1600 ISO film and captured him at work.

A few years ago I was asked to take some photographs of Julian Hand at his home to accompany some editorial for The Oscillation, the band that Julian does visuals for. I knew we would want to capture his light shows and was aware that the room would be dark and I couldn’t use a flash. I brought a roll of 800 ISO colour film and a roll of 1600 ISO film along with my trusty LC-A+.

I made the decision that I wanted lots of unusual light streaks and double exposures as well as some portraits. Julian set up his equipment and I snapped away quite freely, moving the camera around to create some swirly light effects and then doubling this over with a portrait. It was all very free and I really wasn’t sure how they would come out.

It turns out that high ISO film works perfectly in these conditions. Some of the colours came out really bright and intense and everyone was really happy with the results. Since these shots were taken Julian has been touring with the band regularly and recently made a music video for TOY.
