LomoAmigo: Dive Underwater with Rebecca Handler

1

Before summer comes to an end, hold on to the magic of the season with these underwater photographs of mysterious mermaids by Rebecca Handler.

Rebecca Handler’s creative journey was conceived in the analogue world. Her first experience with cameras was when her father bought her a Polaroid camera at a young age. Since then, the visual arts and creative imagery have always been a huge part of her life. She continued to practice photography in high school and her hobby turned into an obsession. She found herself continuously inspired and passionate about photography that her only option was to turn a hobby into a lifelong career.

Rebecca used the LC-A+ and Krab Underwater Housing to take these photos. “At first, I thought of the camera and housing as a toy. As I experimented, and let go of control, I fell in love with the fun little camera. It is a bit unpredictable as it creates ‘happy accidents.’ The imperfections that the camera produces offer a vintage aesthetic and a beautiful sense of nostalgia to images. I love it!”

Coming from a digital era, it is often times hard to let go of control, but like Rebecca said, sometimes the best photos come from accidents! Rebecca shoots mostly digital and plans each shot before execution. “Shooting with Lomography forced me to let go of control, and let the camera work it’s magic.” Rebecca learned to let go of her expectations, and rather, anticipate the surprises that have yet to come from picking up a roll of developed negatives.

Rebecca is inspired by sub-culture movements and alternative genres of music, movies, and art. The world around her is a source of inspiration. Besides photography, she loves scuba diving, motorcycle, movies, music, art, and crafts. She loves building, learning, and always keeping herself busy. She finds importance in surrounding herself with wonderful people and is grateful for all that life has brought her so far.

She dishes out advice for aspiring photographers. “This is a hard field to work in, so a good work ethic goes a long way. If you can find a way to pay the bills and do what you love, you are a success!
You will find gratification in the happiness you receive, doing what you love. And shoot, shoot, shoot!”

“Listen to those around you, and keep an open mind. Be kind to other photographers and generous to emerging ones. Share knowledge, inspire, and be open to be inspired.”
