LomoAmigos: Public Service Broadcasting

2

Public Service Broadcasting is a UK-based duo with J. Willgoose, Esq. on guitar, banjo & samplings and Wrigglesworth on drums & piano. They’ve been on tour promoting their debut album “Inform – Educate – Entertain,” which was released in 2013. The folks at Lomography UK managed to catch them mid-tour for an interview and gave them an LC-A+ to capture all the action.

Please introduce yourselves to the Lomography Community.

We’re Public Service Broadcasting, a decidedly odd duo that samples old public information, archive and propaganda material and set it to new music that we write around it.

What inspires you to write music?

I’ve been writing music since I was.. well, since the first time I stumbled across a keyboard I think, probably age 6 or so. Terrible music, but music nonetheless. I wouldn’t say I was inspired, more compelled – if I’m not working on something or writing something, I get pretty down and grumpy. It feels entwined with my personality, anyway.

What advice would you give to other budding musicians who want to make in in the music industry?

Work hard, be nice, take care of yourself (I normally fail on that one) and don’t worry if no-one else really believes in you at the start. You’ll get a lot of people telling you ‘no’, or saying ‘it’ll never work’. For us to have got where we are now, I’m ready to ignore most of that kind of feedback. And above all, write the best songs that you can, and learn the most important skill as a songwriter you’ll ever have – the power of self-editing!

How was it shooting with the LC-A+?

I’m not much of a photographer, to be honest, so I struggled a little, but (unsurprisingly given the nature of our outfit) the analogue side to it all appealed to me – the lack of instant gratification / feedback was quite satisfying, in an odd way.

If your photos could have a soundtrack, what would it be? (5 songs, title and artist please)

Well given that most of them are us playing, I’d better put one of ours in there at least:

Public Service Broadcasting – Everest
Xavier Cugat & his Orchestra – Brasil
Gustavo Santaolalla – Iguazu
Tortoise – Ten Day Interval
British Sea Power – Waving Flags

What’s next for Public Service Broadcasting?

Who knows! But for us, our new album will be out in February and we’ll be jetting off all over the place.. it promises to be an exciting year for us. Hopefully I get a bit better at taking care of myself too!

Thanks for the interview. Looking forward to the new album. which will be out in February.
