Album Review: Without My Enemy What Would I Do

Made in Heights is at it again. In May 2015, Alexei Saba Mohajerjasbi and Kelsey Bulkin released their album “Without My Enemy What Would I Do.” This album tests the boundaries of genre by pulling from all forms of music to create a paradigm shift of preconceived notions.

“Without My Enemy What Would I Do” is a journey that begins with “Death”. It is a paradox that starts at the end. It is only after we accept that death, or that change is a naturally occurring phenomenon will it enable us to experience life with no inhibitions.

“Now I comprehend that death is not the end. And the world that we destroyed wasn’t real enough to live in. But I’m alive, Yes I am alive. I can feel it running up and down my spine”

Swami Rama once said that “One experiences death many times in the course of the changes of a lifetime. For a seed to sprout, it must die in its form as a seed.” Made in Heights successfully took this idea and interpreted it in a pure form of expression. This album is a lesson that without challenge, one would not be able to grow. It is only because of strife that we are able to get to where we are in life.

This album takes us through a world of travels — places where all can find a home. The familiar, the forgotten, the forlorn, and the faithful. The complexity of the music is revealed in intricate layers of lyrics, beats, and musicality, with an attention to detail to the tone and the mood. The challenge for musicians in this time and age is to create a unique sound that stands out. Made in Heights takes us by storm. Speakers and headphones can only do so much justice. This music is something that is crucial to listen to in real life, as Made in Heights will bring energy of dedication and passion. Made in Heights gave another stellar performance at Electric Forest 2015, further setting the bar for stand out performances. Presence, passion, and a boatload of grooves.

There once was a curious child who sat at the foot of the mountain with his gaze fixed upon the heights. The clouds drifted apart to reveal the magnificent sun as she smiled at the dancing figurine. The child was filled with wonder. “Dear sun, who are you?” The sun smiled her radiant smile and the child would be filled with energy. The child resolved to get closer to the sun and set off on an everlasting journey upwards and onwards.

The weaving, wandering road took him through the ups and the downs, through the uncertain turnarounds. Time passed and the child, who was no longer a child, came upon the heights, as close to the sun as he could possibly be. The man was filled with wonder. “Dear sun, who are you?” The sun smiled her radiant smile and unfolded her arms like a staircase. The man climbed the sky, upwards and onwards to become the brilliant light.
