Fashion Week LomoAmigos: The Broken Hearts DJs

The Broken Hearts are turntable goddesses, fashion icons, artists, muses, and also our latest LomoAmigos! They’ve been out and about with the LomoKino and some smashing legwear, and shot us this short film…

Tell us a bit about yourselves:
We’re predominantly DJs – both live and on the radio- but we’re also involved in numerous arts, fashion and music projects from putting together compilation albums to designing clothes. You can find out more about us on our website

Are you taking part in London Fashion Week at all? If so, what will you be doing?
Yes we are! We’ve known Amy and Percy of PPQ for years and we always love going to their shows, so we’ll be there on the 17th. And we’re DJing at Rodnik's presentation too – we love his concept of ‘wearable art’. We also played at his show last season and his clothes are so much fun – really over the top and theatrical, just what we love!

You are involved in all sorts of projects, from art to music, what have been your favourites so far?:
We really love working on our radio show, Peppermint Candy on Jazz FM. It’s a celebration of inter-war culture focussing on swing music and the trends that the era continues to influence from fashion to food, film and literature. So as well as the music, we’ve featured guests from Gizzi Erskine and Bompas and Parr to Tatty Devine all discussing how this era influences what they do now. We also got to put out a compilation album of our favourite swing tracks and we were really pleased to get a great review in The Guardian when we started the show last year.

If you could do any project in the world what would it be?
A couple of years ago we made a short film about the history of the circus – we would love to expand this into a bigger project, or write a book about it if there are any takers!

As well as being two of the hottest djs on the London club scene you are well known for your sense of style, what is your favourite outfit?
We have quite a lot of outfits now so it can be difficult to choose! We have about 5 hand-crafted, personalised shoes made for us by the shoe legend Terry de Havilland that we particularly love. He even named some designs after us this season! We also have some custom-fit PPQ outfits from shows we’ve done for them in the past. And our friend Amechi makes a lot of our costumes – they’re really dramatic, we love them!

Tell us about your LC-A+ shots.
We took our photos when we were in Blackpool for the Showzam! Festival of Circus and Magic. We’ve been every year since it started, it’s one of the highlights of our calendar! We loved the faded glory of seaside towns, and Blackpool is the biggest and brightest of them all. We were DJing at the Carnival Ball in the INCREDIBLE tower ballroom, and our friend (and fellow LomoAmigo!) Marawa the Amazing is always involved in the festival too, so it’s a lot of fun. This year we also did a tour of the Winter Gardens and the Pleasure Beach so we certainly made the most of our trip!

If your photos had a soundtrack what would it be?
Our photos would definitely have to be seaside themed, as they were mainly taken in Blackpool, so maybe we’d go for Rockaway Beach by the Ramones, With My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock by George Formby and our single Count Those Freaks! by the Broken Hearts.

Did you enjoy using the LC-A+ and LomoKino?
Yes we loved it! Everyone is so used to digital now that it’s really exciting to take pictures and not know how they’re going to come out.

If you could photograph anyone in the world who would it be and what would they be doing?
We’d love to trail Ari Seth Cohen, the photographer behind Advanced Style and photograph the amazing New York ladies he takes pictures of on a daily basis.

If you could be photographed by anyone in the world who would it be and what would you be doing?
We actually already did this shoot! We were photographed by Ellen von Unwerth for her book Fraulein. We were dressed as clowns, and looked like spooky twins – a look we’ve perfected over the years.

Lastly, what’s your fashion forecast for the next season?
The Roaring Twenties is a huge look for this coming summer which is quite exciting for us as it’s one of the decades we love discussing on our radio show. Our haircuts are quite 1920s-inspired too! So we’re looking forward to getting our hands on lots of cloche hats and drop-waist dresses once the weather warms up a bit.
