Kodak ProFoto XL 100 35mm: Perfect Colors Under the Sun

Recently, I got three 35 mm Kodak ProFoto XL 100 films. I found them weird because I had never seen them before, so I did a little bit of research. Apparently, it is a variation of the ProImage 100, but it is made to be distributed in countries with ‘non-ideal’ weather conditions like Mexico, for example. It is made to resist high temperatures like the frequent ones here in Mexico, so it isn’t absolutely necessary to keep it in the fridge.

Among what I read about this film, I found very good comments about it, so I decided to use it for the first time for an occasion that was worth it. Some weeks ago I bought a Yashica Electro 35 GSN and a couple of days later I went to San Miguel de Allende, which was great to try the film.

Now, the most important thing: the photos. As it was an ISO 100 film, I decided that all my photos would be shot during the day in order to take advantage of the sunlight. Excellent decision. The light provided by the sunlight maximizes the colors that this film is able to deliver: well saturated, contrasted and accurate.

I shot three photos under less appropriate light conditions, and the results were not the best, but definitely, they show the film’s potential. I shot when it was already dark, taking advantage of a lamp’s light. Then I shot one using the Bulb mode. It came out a bit shaky, but the important thing is that even under these conditions there are tones which stand out pretty well. Later, I shot inside a church and the photo was not good at all, but on the parts which were best lightened, it didn’t lose too much clearness.

As far as I know, this film is distributed in countries like Mexico, but it is not impossible to get it in other countries. So if you ever get the chance, buy it, while it is very cheap and the results are excellent. It is highly recommended for any trip, excursion or a simple walk through the city.
