Monday Moodboard: Multi-purpose Altoids Tin Pinhole Camera

My fascination with interesting DIY projects took me by surprise with a sharp turn home to a film photography project.

DIY pinhole cameras are not at all surprising news. I’ve seen few impressive handmade pinhole cameras here and there. Some notable lensless cameras are Kwanghun Hyun’s mechanical pinhole cameras, Penny the matchbox pinhole camera, the film box pinhole camera, the dual-filmed Tardis camera, James Guerin’s panoramic pinhole camera, and a Diana F+-inspired cardboard camera.

All of these pinhole cameras have a story to tell and so does this recent discovery of mine. I came upon this neat DIY pinhole camera after researching several uses for tin cans (mostly for everyday carry or EDC survival or med kit usage.)

Floating in a sea of improvised duct tape rolls, emergency items, and fire starters, there was this simple pinhole camera made from an empty Altoids tin can. There was nothing fancy about it but what mattered was it got the job done.

With precise understanding of pinhole camera workings, *Chris Keeney* (the creator and original poster of the photos) created a rugged but dependable pinhole camera that you can simply slide in your pocket and you’re good to go. Transport is easy, advancing the film is simple and most importantly you get to shoot film photographs in a uniquely personal way.

Projects like these really get me because I like re-purposed items. I feel that reused items prove their worth by being simple and usable. I’m thinking that this simple pinhole camera is an attainable project for people like me who like to get busy during weekends. It’s also a great way to recycle used Altoids tin cans lying around. It’s a win-win situation for nature, DIY aficionados and film photography nuts.
