Lomographers Recommend 5 Winter Destinations in Europe

Count on well-traveled Lomographers to know the touristic and aesthetic virtues of Europe in December.

Venice

“Venice has two sides. One is full of tourists, always crowded, and expensive – St Mark’s Square, Basilica, Canale Grande or Ponte Rialto. Here you can explore the city’s “must-sees.” It’s also perfect for those who prefer elegant restaurants and their own guide. The famous gondolas with a singing gondoliere can also be found here. The other side is completely different. It is reserved for someone who is not afraid to stray from the path. There, you can find peace and observe slow-paced Italian life. You can see old women hanging laundry, small children playing in the boats or meet a gondoliere who is taking a nap close to the canal.” -@kasia

Barcelona

“During our four-day stay in the city we got to do all kinds of outdoor things that just wouldn’t be feasible in the dull English wintertime. We spent hours on the beach, had picnics outside along the sea front, watched buskers outside cafes and bars, took a ride on a cable car up a mountain, watched an outdoor fountain show, and walked around the roof of an arena. Of course, with such glorious weather we also found some time to sample a lot of local sangria!” -@fletchinski84

Budapest

“It was already night when my boyfriend and I arrived, and even though it was extremely cold and windy, there was no snow to be found anywhere! But this was no disappointment. We didn’t even have the chance to think about the missing snow (for which we had traveled so far for) because Budapest is simply breathtaking. Even better than we imagined. To us, Budapest looked like a place where time had stopped a hundred years ago. The buildings with all their ornaments and decorations were well-preserved and whenever we compared photos of the city as printed on old postcards with the present, we could hardly tell any difference.” -@philippa

Copenhagen

“You will feel at home in no time. It is such a small welcoming city where people know each other. It is famous for a beautiful harbor that lies in the center of the city, connected to a long, winding river. Along the harbor are rows of pastel-colored houses and sweet cafes. I stayed with a family member living on the outskirts called Solrand Strand, which is right near the beach and is simply beautiful no matter what season! During winter, you might find a wide beach with blocks of ice everywhere.” -@nadinadu

Lapland

“Northern Lapland looks incredibly bare compared to the rest of Finland and somehow that makes it more fascinating.” -Lomo Amigo and environmental photographer Polly Balitro
