1

Luca Ortolani is a talented portrait photographer, with a really captivating style. He took the New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control along with him around the cities of Milan, where he realized some nice glamour shots.

Let's see his pictures and get to know him a bit better in this interview.

Hi Luca and welcome to Lomography! What has your educational and working path been like?

Hello Lomography! I am based in Forlì, in the central part of Italy. I started photography in 2010, thanks to the passion transmitted by my father.

Since the very beginning, I have been attracted by portrait photography, but my desire of experiment pushed me to expand my horizons and I started working for big events, concerts, weddings, reportages and so on. In these years I had the chance to met many photographers, with whom I shared ideas and projects: this is for me the best way for evolving and learning.

Today, photography occupies most part of my day. When I do not photograph, I do researchers or think about new projects.

How do you empathize with your subjects?

As in love, also in photography, it is necessary to build that particular "chemistry" that allows achieving the right feeling with the subject. I talk with my subjects and I try to make them feel comfortable: I always rely on my genuineness and my typical Italian humor.

I do not need that much for being inspiring: I love small details, like a particular light in a room, a gesture, a movement, a line of the body.

What did you shoot with the New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens?

I simply wanted to combine in the same set two things that I really love: portraiture and Milan, a city I am totally in love with.

Which were your first impressions of the New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control?

I was really impressed by the bokeh control and the possibility to select the intensity of the bokeh. Since it is a manual lens, at the beginning it can be slightly more difficult to use. I was already used to a tilt-shift lens, so I felt immediately confident using it.

What characteristics of the lens did you like the most?

Definitely its bokeh effect, I have never used a lens of this kind and I would really love to experiment more with this particular feature.
