Synesthesia #9 Imagined Album Covers for Winter

1

In the 9th edition of Synesthesia, we return to mix community photos with our music selections. As the holiday season approaches and a more introspective and melancholic mood sets in, these selections are fitting for chilly weather and cozy gatherings. Take a journey through the latest dancefloor tunes, nostalgic video game soundtracks, and familiar indie hits from past decades, all perfectly paired with stunning photos from various Lomographers.

Winter has taken over much of the northern hemisphere, with cooler breezes and darker days being felt. @jaya captures a winter scene in the Rocky Mountains that looks calm and serene. The coverings of snow in this scenic environment instantly transported me to when I was younger playing Harvest Moon where my only experience of snow was felt through video games. Pairing this scene with cozy tracks from Novo Amor and Birdy captures the feeling of serenity and peacefulness.

Miyuki Homareda - Harvest Moon – Back to Nature Winter Theme Song
Novo Amor - Weather
Birdy - White Winter Hymnal

This photo capture by @iamsosha reminds me of editorial shoots for all-female musical groups, whether indie darlings or mainstream pop idols. The use of black and white film and visible grain adds a sense of drama and emotion to the photo which reminds me of the supergroup boygenius. For this reason, I have chosen a few songs from all-female groups, ranging from melancholic music to more upbeat feel-good bangers.

boygenius - Satanist
HAIM - If I Could Change Your Mind
Sugababes - Angels With Dirty Faces

@oukrid's photo using the LomoChrome Purple and LomoApparat instantly sent me back to the late 2000s and early 2010s. Shot during an excursion to an abandoned prison, the LomoApparat's vignette adds a punch to the photo, making us focus on the wall text which pertains to freedom. Both the picture's aesthetics and message reminded me of alternative and indie songs from the era of the 2000s and 2010s, wherein a sense of freedom, expression, and having fun is predominant.

Arcade Fire - No Cars Go
LCD Soundsystem - Disco Infiltrator
Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy

A psychedelic and trippy photo using the Diana Mini and LomoChrome Turquoise, this photo by @sukeppler reminds me of the energy and movement you capture at parties despite it being a still-life photo of someone being shot in between a drinking glass. The outlandish colors mixed with the blur and dreaminess of the photos are perfectly paired with some high-energy and ear-pleasing dance floor cuts that are ready to make your feet move.

Ryo Kawasaki & Satellites - Electric World
Wallace - Willow
Nomad - I Wanna Give You Devotion (Bump Ambient Vocal Freedom Mix)

As it is the holiday season, this picture shot by @pjama114 invokes a feeling of that mellow and calm holiday spirit. The subtle reds in the ambient lighting are imposed by these star-like lights which creates an abstract yet familiar feeling of the holiday mode which we feel around this time. I chose music that resonates with the feelings of nostalgia and tranquility of December.

Junichi Masuda - Vermilion City
Kaito - Rainbow Circles (Beatless Version)
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
