Oxbridge Farm B&B, Dorset, UK

A super nice bed & breakfast in Dorset.

It was quite short notice from my bf that we were going to spend an Easter break in Dorset. I called tons of B&Bs without any luck as every place was already fully booked. Also, I hadn’t been to Dorset before so I didn’t know which part to focus on. Luckily for me, http://www.iknow-dorset.co.uk/ helped me. After a few more calls, I found Oxbridge Farm Bed and Breakfast, which still had some rooms available. To be honest, I always do prefer to stay at a farm B&B if possible.

Finding Oxbridge Farm is easier if you have a Tom Tom/Sat Nav as it is hidden 4 miles away from Bridport. Proprietor Carolyn Marshall is a lovely, lovely lady! She didn’t insist on us having breakfast at a ridiculously early hour, as usually is the case, but let us have it at 10am instead. She also let us choose what we wanted to eat. As I am not a fan of English breakfast (at all), I was served smoked salmon instead. Also, Carolyn will cook your eggs any way you like. And, she left us our morning milk by the bedroom door – so sweet!

All the food and vegetables were locally sourced. Apart from evening meals, summer BBQs can also be arranged. In winter, you can sit by the roaring log fire. Accommodation of your own horse and dog by prior arrangement.

The price is £35 per person for the double en-suite room. Wake up and watch the deer and foxes from your bedroom window!

A vast well-signed network of footpaths spreads across the area. No matter how much you are into hiking, you can find a path of any length to enjoy. We started by walking to the closest pub in Melplash Village. Local horses chewed on my bag while I was posing next to them for a picture. The Half Moon Inn is considered to be impossible to get a table in, but we were lucky. Still, ring for a reservation just in case – 01308 488 321. The menu is basic pub food, we found it to be nothing special, although locals praise the new management.

Another walk to make from the farm could be to The Hare & The Hounds Pub in Waytown. Crazy locals perform live music in the evenings and there is some excellent ale. Go for Dorset Gold, you will not be disappointed!
